The Wine Competition was the "kick-off" for the 18th annual McMinnville Wine and Food Classic, which will be held this year on March 11th, 12th, and 13th, 2011 at The Evergreen Space Museum. The Wine Competition, as well as the reception that followed, was held at the Evergreen IMAX Theater.

This year 9 judges critiqued 197 wines from 54 Oregon Wineries, and approximately 80 wines were awarded medals for their technical quality. The judges were as follows:
Steven DeShaw – 40 years of wine and restaurant experience as a wine buyer, wine investor, and past owner of a winery in the Willamette Valley
Bill Breitzmann – professional wine appraiser/consultant; past involvement as a wine retailer/consignment specializing in the sale of fine wines/span>
Patrick McElligott – 29 years of involvement in the wine industry; currently involved with marketing and sales for Sineann Winery
Michael Dietrich – Wine Steward, Fred Meyers (Tualatin); past judge for the Oregon State Fair Competitions
Mike Klym – Wine Steward, Lamb’s Market (Wilsonville); 40 years experience in retail, wholesale, restaurant, and winemaking
Michael Rone – Manager, Nick’s Italian Café
Anthony Danna –award winning chef; 44 years of experience in fine dining and currently the Executive Chef at Holiday Retirement Corporation; he has received a number of local and national awards, including the “Julia Childs Award” in 1991 for “Caterer of the Year” and most recently “The Charles Altorfer Award” for professionalism from the American Culinary Federation; while at the Benson Hotel, he cooked for 5 Presidents
Ted Farthing – served as Executive Director of the Oregon Wine Board and Oregon Winegrowers Association for six years; he has recently opened a full-service wine & food marketing agency (Ted Farthing & Associates, LLC), which manages PR, social media and direct sales for brands including Carlton Farms and Seven Hills.
Linda Lindsay – Winemaker, Stone Wolf Vineyards
Darcy Pendergrass – Head Winemaker, Amity Vineyards; she has served as a judge at several amateur and professional wine competitions. In addition, she has worked two vintages in New Zealand for her friends at Dry River Winery, and her true passion is creating world-class wines, particularly Pinot Noir and Riesling. |
